Olivia loves reading and portrait sketching. She attends Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Primary School, and was inspired to write ‘Bathtub Mermaid’ shortly before her tenth birthday, after reading a healthy discussion on whether mermaids have knees on the internet. Olivia also speaks and writes fluent Korean having studied the language since she was eight. In 2018, she won the JAL prize in the 15th World Children’s Haiku Competition.
The Young Author Scheme really broadened my perspective and I learnt so much more than just how to write good stories. I got to learn the whole process of how to make your ideas come to fruition as an actual published book. The facilitator was very engaging and shared many insights from her deep experience in the world of publishing. The workshop was also very fun, especially the sharing of ideas with other aspiring young writers; something you don’t often get to do in school. You even get to illustrate your own story! As an avid reader, the opportunity to learn about how books are actually made was invaluable.
