  • Visual Aids
    We are bombarded by so many ads that scream for us to buy the latest fashion, the latest pair of shoes … Then I came across this very eye-catching poster, advertising, of all things, a “garage” sale when I was in Seoul for the recent Seoul International Book Fair. Check it out! Sometimes words become [...]

  • YAC – The First Session!
    Last Friday, Sofia, Adeline and I had an amazing time at Woodlands Regional Library. We were at our first session of the Young Author Club. I must admit, we were a little nervous at first. We hoped the participants coming in would enjoy themselves, would listen and most importantly, would participate. The energy in the Everest [...]

How do you catch/capture the attention of a class of 5 to 7 year olds? A child's attention span is often very short-lived. However, their creativity overflows with abundance! Harnessing its essence requires a well-rounded programme to fully uncover their potential.

“Foundation Steps” is developed by Ms Catherine Khoo, founder of the famous Young Author Scheme. With more than 15 years of experience in media and publishing, she now brings with her this passion to mould young minds.

Foundation Steps' two programmes, Alphabet Authors© and Alphabet Expressions© are specially designed enrichment programmes that cater to the needs of children from ages of 5 to 7 years olds.

Alphabet Authors© and Alphabet Expresssions© are developed by media and education specialists who are behind the two Gifted Education Programmes (GEP):

  • the AWIS: used by many schools as a prelude to the Young Author's Scheme: to discover nuggets of creative expression;
  • and the YAS: mentored more than 1,000 young authors since 2003.

Why Alphabet Authors©?

Draw and write? Yes, research in early childhood development has indicated that the visual senses in a five and six-year-old are acute. What's important is for him to express his thoughts. Through listening and learning from stories penned by Singapore's very own young authors aged 8 to 12, Alphabet Authors© will give your child the exclusive chance to create his own masterpiece.

Why Alphabet Expressions©?

Speak and write? Yes, that is what Alphabet Expressions© is about. Pre-schoolers will now have the opportunity to be exposed to the basics of writing and speaking. Building a child's confidence requires time and effort, therefore it is imperative to start your little ones with the appropriate guidance at an impressionable age. Alphabet Expressions© will guide your child on the creation of his/her own story and then putting it into an audio visual story making it highly interactive and fun for energetic little minds!
