The mood was set for the year’s biggest book awards for children: The Young Author Awards 2011/12, which commenced with the Asian Festival of Children’s Content at the Arts House last 27 May 2012. Set in the historic Chamber that housed the former Singaporean Parliament, this year’s YAA eyed three top prizes and 20 merit awardees, and the soft launch of the Young Author Club Books’ newest journal in collaboration with the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore.

Singapore telecom giant SingTel joined the YAA as it is sponsors the next round of hopefuls for 2012/13. Also in this year’s YAA is the launch of the I Care and Share Journal, a project done together with the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore.

YAA

Winning the top 3 spots in this year’s YAA were the following: Josabelle Wong from Henry Park Primary School, 1st prize; Dejoy Shastikk Kumaran from St Hilda’s Primary School, 2nd prize; and Sharon Skariah from Global Indian International School, 3rd prize. A roster of 20 other students were awarded merit prizes during the event. All 50 finalists were granted publishing contracts for conversions to e-books.

    JUNE HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES
The June holidays are just around the corner. Why not spend your holidays on a worthwhile programme? Join the following course offerings in either Joo Chiat or Bukit Timah, to make your June holidays even more creative:

ASPIRING WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS SCHEME. Draw and write? Yes, Research in early childhood development has indicated that the visual senses in 9 to 11 year olds are acute. What’s important is for him to express his thoughts. This highly interactive programme will get him to discover the creative writer in him. It also serves as an intensive introduction to composition writing. Aspiring writers will also learn the art of illustrating from a professional artist. The result: a compilation of the best stories in a specially-designed volume.

YOUNG AUTHOR SCHEME. Veteran author Catherine Khoo and her team of published authors will guide and mentor your child to craft his very own story of at least 3,000 words. Since its successful launch in 2003, the Young Author Scheme (YAS) has mentored hundreds of children. Many of its students have seen their own books published as paperbacks or e-books, which are available in all NLB branches. The YAS preludes the annual Young Author Award, supported by MDA, NLB, NBDCS and the Singapore Book Publishers Association.
